The National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) is an organization of journalists, students and media-related professionals that provides quality programs and services to and advocates on behalf of black journalists worldwide. Founded in 1975, NABJ is the largest organization of journalists of color in the world.

Many of NABJ's 3,300 members also belong to one of the dozens of professional and student chapters that serve black journalists nationwide.

The ability to network with others Worldwide is a primary reason that in 2002 students at Southern Illinois University Carbondale formed a student chapter of NABJ.

We help African American students to develop a network in journalism and the communications field. We also sponsor activities for the community and help to produce programming for the SIUC broadcasting service.

Active members will receive hands on experience in their field of interest. At our regular meetings members come together to discuss issues, concerns and problems relating to their specific field of study in the College of Mass Communication and Media Arts.

These discussions are not complaint forums, but problem solving gatherings designed to bring the concerns of students to the attention of the faculty and
staff, and most importantly, to help students to overcome the problems they are encountering.

During the 2002- 2003 academic year the SIU Student Chapter of NABJ sponsored visiting journalists from major newspapers including Journalists from the African nations of Malawi and Uganda. These programs gave SIU students insight to the status of journalism around the nation and around the world.

Membership in the NABJ opens the door to networking with journalists of color at newspapers, radio, television, magazines and new media outlets across the country. The NABJ website has information on job openings and is available only to members. The NABJ awards academic scholarships and sponsors intern programs.

The SIU student Chapter hopes to institute a monthly newsletter and TV show that will allow members to display their talents as well as present news of interest to all students and those who live in the SIUC community.

We plan to continue our annual visit to the African American Job Fair at Howard University in Washington and other regional events of interest.

The goal of the NABJ student chapter is to better the student experience in each of the major fields of study in the College of Mass Communications and Media Arts. We will address issues and work together, as a village, to better our field. Membership in the NABJ is open to all who are interested.
